Cherry Turnovers with Stella’s magic

29 Mar

Stella's quick pastry dough recipe with kitchen implements. This past weekend, the kitchen offerings were weak and burnt at best.  Melted gummi bears running amuck, melted, and rather bitter.  A mango madness that fizzled and left me in near tears.  What to do to get me back on my game?  Probably something simpler and more comfort-foody.

I had eyed Stella’s Quick Pastry Dough and decided with her magical abilities, I could make cherry turnovers.  Ideally, I would have loved to have gotten my hands on some guava jelly, but I was in comfy yoga pants and didn’t want to venture out into the real world.  I wanted to make something that I could consume while watching The Blindside.

Here’s how it went down:

1) Flour, salt and butter.

2) Using a pastry cutter, combining flour/salt and butter.

3) Adding the yogurt/water to the flour/butter which looks like Africa or a wonky heart.

4) Dough ready to roll out with trusty French rolling pin that my dad made.

5) Chilling in the refrigerator with my favourite food peeps, yogurt!

6) Cutting and assembly. TIP: Before pressing with a fork, I'd recommend putting some egg along the edges to help glue the sides down.

7) A little casualty; baked with cinnamon sugar. Mmmm.... Thank you Stella for this amazing recipe. Feeling better already <3

Pretty turnovers Jenn! And god, how I love cherries!! You know now I’m convinced I need to get me one of those nifty looking pastry cutter thingies cos the pastry looks A-MA-ZING! Love the cooking pictorial and the imaginary smells from your turnovers !!! :D

Thanks Denise :) These turned out really well, and I’m already thinking of things to make with this dough. It is Magical!!! *waves a wand*.
Bob likes cherries, but he wants apple now so I’ll have to get some apple pie filling for my young man.

If there’s one thing i’d recommend you getting for your kitchen, it’s definitely a pastry cutter. I could have easily blitzed this in the food processor, but you don’t get the pea-sized shape that you need. Or maybe you do and I just whizz it for too long. Either or, it’s great for pastry and I actually use it to mash my bananas when I make banana bread and the like.

How gorgeous!!! Well this certainly must have taken you out of your funk! Look how beautifully they turned out, and they look delicious! (Love your Africa milk puddle!)

These definitely got me out of my funk. I wanted something that looked delicious and would feed my empty and depressed stomach. They certainly did the trick. I love this pic of the cherries coming out. That Africa puddle was so random! I love when neat shapes come out of the blue.

    Yum! I am jealous..

    • defunktgourmet March 30, 2010 at 6:44 pm #

Why are you jealous??? You make pannacotta and create your own dishes. You have gifts!!!

A little leakage is hard to avoid, but they’re beautiful!

    • defunktgourmet March 30, 2010 at 6:45 pm #

Thank you Shirley! For visiting and the kind words. That was the only one that leaked, surprisingly. But I thought it made for a more interesting photo. That bit of red adds some pizzazz. I could be wrong. *8/10 food photographers agreed that a non-leaky turnover would have been better*.

Love the shots! I bet they were oh so tasty!

    • defunktgourmet March 30, 2010 at 6:46 pm #

SOooooooooo good Peggy. Who doesn’t love pastry for breakfast? Well any time really. :)

Hey Jenn, does your site have a new look or am I imagining things? Either way, looks nice!
Thanks for trying the quick pastry dough-I hope you guys liked it. Your shapes look better than mine by the way-I’m so lazy about stuff like that (smile)!

    • defunktgourmet March 30, 2010 at 6:49 pm #

Hi Stella, yes, the site has changed slightly. I’m still trying to find a theme that I really enjoy. This one is currently passable. I’m not a huge fan of the grey, but I don’t mind the layout otherwise. I’m glad you like it!
I actually thought my shapes were really rustic looking. I was actually more concerned with keeping the cherry in and minimal leakage. This dough is magic. So easy, so quick and there are so many ways to use it. Thank you for letting us in on your little secret *hugz*

oh my gaaawwwd they look beautiful Jenn – well done!!! Definitely a great way to end such a crazy weekend, what with the bitter gummi bears hanging around and all. Like the layout! also like the summer hours posting – agreed, you need to get away from the screen SOMETIME. ::sigh:: how can I get paid to blog about food all day? and read food blogs as well?

P.S. I go out in yoga pants all the time. to hell with everyone haha! I won’t go out in my pj’s, that’s just wrong.

  8. defunktgourmet March 30, 2010 at 6:52 pm #

Thank you Candice :) I am really happy with how these turnovers turned out. Seriously, this pastry was the fastest to make. I’ve made croissant before and though it’s not hard, it is time consuming. With minimal time, this is great in a pinch.
I know… I would love to be paid to blog and read blogs as well. An ideal, non?
P.S. True, I go out in my yoga pants but I was in the deepest of funks. Didn’t want any humans near by. I’m glad you don’t go out in your pj’s!!! I hate it when people go out like that. It’s just so wrong. Have you no pride??? gah.

You have me craving cherries… they are my absolute favourite fruit, I grew up with an amazing and very fruitful tree in my backyard, made great pies, but I ate most of them fresh by the bowl-full.
Your turnovers look amazing, the one with the leak has character ;) … it has me drooling, I can almost taste it. All your baking posts are giving me the itch…

    • defunktgourmet April 6, 2010 at 8:33 pm #

You used to have a cherry tree??? So LUCKY!!! Man, how unique. We grew up with a crab apple tree, pretty typical. But cherries would be lovely. I would love to have a fig tree, apparently you can grow them indoors. I’ll let you know if that every comes to fruition.

hahaha!!! I say give ‘er a go! I made some apple ones this past weekend. Bob loved those better cos he’s not a fan of cherry *face palm* say what? Baking is my weakness…. I just realized that most of my posts are baking and sweets… hmmm…. sweet tooth?

  10. sweetlife March 31, 2010 at 12:24 am #

hey leakage is good…means those cherries are screaming to get eaten!! great post..I saw this on stella’s site and craved them but then my junk wiggled..and the craving died!!

    • defunktgourmet April 6, 2010 at 8:35 pm #

Don’t let that craving die!!!!! Bonnie, this dough is magical and wondrous. There so much stuff you can do with it. I already have ideas running through my head on this one little recipe!!!
      I doubt you’ve got junk ;)
I am going through a healthy detox… though… these kinder bueno eggs are NOT helping. Maybe the detox will start next week???
